The wedding cake has been an integral part of the wedding celebration since Roman times when a thin wheat cake, representing bounty, was crumbled over the bride's head to ensure her fertility. Today, the cake is treated with respect - the loving couple are photographed cutting the cake together and then small pieces of cake are served to all. Cake is often sent to those unable to attend the wedding. The top layer of the cake has also been traditionally saved for either the couple's first wedding anniversary, or to use as a Christening cake for the first child. The recommended way of preserving the cake is to wrap it tightly, then freeze it.
